about Win'

Welcome to Mancinism Design, this website serves as an online portfolio to view the vast majority of my work and projects, whether it be personal or professional... it also acts as a insight into my home business and gives you an idea of my creative style, the range of services and the diverse clientele I've had the pleasure of working with.

I first discovered my creative talent when I moved from the "ghetto" that was Chapeltown, Leeds to London where I found a better education in October 1981... through my primary and secondary academic years I began to make a name for myself, being recognised for my artistic and creative skills.

I then went onto college where I studied a 2 year course in BTEC NDD (National Diploma in Design), but coming toward the end of this, I didn't feel ready to move on to university... so I continued to practice my work in my bedroom and also got involved with my local community, events, arts organisations, etc. This was like getting myself used to what it would be like to be self-employed. I decided I needed an identity, and since I was playing around with an idea through college, I finalised the branding and called myself "illfacey grafix"...

In 1996, I decided I was ready for university and studied an Art & Design Foundation course at Lifelong Learning where I was awarded the highest accreditation which then lead me to gain an unconditional offer to Middlesex University in 1997. I graduted my Visual Communication Design degree with honors and came out with a 2:2 in the class of 2000... The featured image is me winning 1st prize at Lewisham Council's International Women's Week Competition: Domestic Violence in 2004.

Bio

I've always been greatly influenced by comics / graphic novels, animation and especially Japanese art and culture; elegant and spacious design, pure and simple, geometric and bold, with the 'less is more' approach. However, when drawing what I see, whether it be real life or from a 2D format, I am obsessed with detail and perfecting my tonal skills.

I don't have a list of historical artists who inspire me, my own imagination inspires me, but I will say one thing, M.C. Escher is the only artist that made a lasting impression on me. Before I even knew his name or who he was, I saw his many enigmatic drawings and graphical work upon a series of 'Smile' maths books at my secondary school.

I've never been the typical artist / designer, I tend to create controversial pieces inspired by my opinions and thoughts upon specific issues that have made an impact on me or my community on some way...I guess this is why I'm so passionate about making a change through my work; merging creative writing (philosophy, poetry, proverbs, etc.) with powerful, thought-provoking, but simple graphics which leave a lasting impression on the viewer...and gets them thinking. This is expressed through my campaigns; Equality & Diversity, Alcohol Awareness and Anti Gun & Knife Crime.
